I was speaking to TheChild the other day and she brought up something from several years ago. After thinking about it for a while, I developed a theory.
According to a hypnotherapist I once saw, every single experience, dream, thought and interpretation of these that we have ever had is stored in our memories - even if some of them have become subconscious.
Perhaps when we are children we have had so few experiences that all of them are readily available and easily accessed within our minds.
By the time a person reaches my age, they have had so many experiences, etc. that the area for storage in the brain has compressed or partitioned some of the information. (Similar to a computer compressing files or creating partitions to free up more space for new information.) As we get older, we have to work harder to locate the information/memories/experiences that we know are in there.
It has always seemed to me that a brain is like a large house with many rooms. Some areas are like junk rooms, filled with totally random information behind a loosely closed door. Other memories are shoved way down into the dark, dank basements, after which the door is closed, locked and then boarded up. Some memories are merely wandering the halls, killing time until they are remembered again.
Wow. That was deep.
Happy Friday!
